Stone Living Lab

How does climate change affect the coasts of Massachusetts, and how can we better understand our role in ensuring these coasts exist into the future? Stone Living Lab is a climate and coastal-focused living lab dedicated to finding answers to these questions. While working at Minelli Inc., I had the opportunity to design a new branding direction for Stone Living Lab.

My design process was deeply informed by their core brand attributes: 'Where Science and Nature Meet,' 'Resilience Through Research,' 'Adaptive Solutions for a Resilient Coast,' and 'Where Innovation Meets Land and Sea.' These themes guided my design process, helping to ensure that the logo and identity would capture the essence of the organization’s mission and values.

The logo itself was inspired by the form of the letter 'S,' which served as a foundational element. The flowing curves and shapes of the logo depict the land, sea, coast, and the interconnectedness and balance between them. The color scheme and gradient usage reflect the dynamic nature of the environment as well, symbolizing the seamless transitions between land, sea, and coast.

Typography also played a crucial role in conveying the brand’s identity. I selected Replica and Replica Mono for their scientific and modern feel, aligning perfectly with Stone Living Lab’s forward-thinking and research-driven ethos. The typography reflects a sense of innovation, maintaining the brands’ connection to its scientific roots while grounding it in a contemporary feel.

The result is a logo that is not only visually striking but also rich in meaning, embodying the lab’s dedication to resilience, research, and the connections between climate change and coastal solutions.
